‘Low Profile presents: Just in Case’ takes the form of a guided tour, where we read from a list of things that we ‘have’ just in case. We bring our audience from the ’safety’ of the institution to ‘unsafe’, and often hidden spaces, such as: fire escapes, roof top spaces, car parks, storage and backstage areas and eventually back to the initial meeting point.
“Ready to go?”
In Giessen, we met with our audience outside the TIL theatre, in the town centre (one of the festival venues). Each audience member was given a walkie talkie with an ear piece. The list began:
“I’ve got…”
Hannah begins to walk down one of the side streets and the audience follows, with Rachel at the rear. We walk first down to a shopping street, through a quiet residential area and then into an underground car park. One half of the group follows Rachel down the stairs of the car park, the others join Hannah in the lift.
“I’ve got…”
Both groups are reunited in the lowest level of the carpark. They can hear the text in unison from both Rachel and Hannah on opposite sides of the car park.
“I’ve got dancing up close next to you just in case a good song comes on
I’ve got catching your eye just in case I can’t work out whether you’re interested”
When we come out of the exit onto the top level, we cross a bridge to a small closed off space by the air conditioning maintence area. Hannah continues reading while Rachel sets up each person’s walkie talkie.
“I’ve got “Testing, Testing…
I’ve got “One, Two, One, Two… ”
Rachel leads the group through a small doorway and down an anonomous corridoor. The audience can now hear the text through the walkie-talkie and earpiece they have been given.
They are brought through a set of large double doors and find themselves in the middle of the city’s largest department store. They are guided through the store and back outside by an exit in a side street.
“I’ve got pretending not to notice what´s going on just in case I get nervous
I’ve got fake tan just in case I ’m going on holliday
I’ve got faking it just in case it’s taking too long
I’ve got lying back and thinking of england just in case it’s that bad
I’ve got staying strong just in case you can’t
I’ve got being brave just in case you get scared”
We keep reading.
The audience are brought on a winding route from the department store back through the backstreets of the shopping area of the city before being returned to the TIL.
