Who helped to make this

The Underdogs was developed specially for the final exhibition of Project Space 11 – an artist-run space based in Plymouth City Market, coordinated by Scott Daniels, Bryony Gillard and Beth Emily Richards.

Where this work has ended up

Project Space 11 created a platform for artist activity in Plymouth City Market for a period of one year. The programme included a rolling series of events, exhibitions and happenings. Alongside this were regular opportunities for artist networking, critical discourse and discussion.  Project Space 11 delivered a series of exhibitions and events in the market and off site, working with a range of established and emerging artists including: The Hut ProjectCraig BarnesSteven Paige, Townley and BradbyThorsten KnaubJonty LeesRhys CorenEllie HarrisonEva and Franco Mattes, LOW PROFILE, Bruce AsbestosEmma Smith, and many more artists and collectives.

The Underdogs

For the final exhibition of Project Space 11 (an artist-run space based in Plymouth City Market), 10 selected artists were invited to invest 1/10th of PS11’s remaining budget (£171) to consolidate the future of the organisation.

LOW PROFILE decided to invest their £17.10 by placing a single bet each day that the gallery was open to the public, in an attempt to raise funds to support PS11’s future, as well as to help finance their own practice as self-employed artists.

Each day of the exhibition, a trip was made to the local betting shop and £1.90 was placed on the rank outsider of a selected sport/race/game that was running that day. LOW PROFILE’s unwavering belief in underdogs (those least likely to win against all odds) paid off when on the last day of the exhibition the horse ‘7 Year Itch’ won the 2:00 race at Catterick on 13th April 2011.
