PEOPLE (Plymouth)

PEOPLE (Plymouth) brings hundreds of people who give their time to benefit others together on Plymouth Hoe for a one-off, flash-mob style event.

Volunteers from across Plymouth have signed up to help re-create an archive photograph by standing in line to spell out the word PEOPLE.

This action recognises, celebrates and honours the city’s volunteers and the significant value of giving ‘free-time’ as a gift to others.

The original 1982 image was taken by Devon & Cornwall Police for Plymouth Guild Of Community Service (now Improving Lives Plymouth)

PEOPLE (Plymouth)

In July 1982, Plymouth Guild of Community Service (now Improving Lives Plymouth) organised a celebratory event on Plymouth Hoe, where hundreds of people gathered to spell out the word PEOPLE. By recreating this event 40 years later in July 2022, we are bringing volunteers from across the city together to acknowledge, draw attention to, celebrate and document people who live and work in our city who give their time for free for the benefit of others.

Volunteers who give their time in a wide range of formal and informal ways have signed up to take part. A number of these volunteers have also shared their stories publicly via our Volunteers Stories page.

Each participant in PEOPLE receives a special commemorative badge, a bookwork about the artwork, a copy of the new digital image created during PEOPLE, and will see this photograph printed as a large billboard on the Millennium Building on Union Street, Plymouth during Autumn 2022.

From Autumn 2022, printed copies of the new PEOPLE image will also be distributed to backers of LOW PROFILE’s crowdfunder, be on sale via LOW PROFILE’s online shop, and be transformed into a limited edition commemorative jigsaw.
